This dissertation arises from the interest in the confrontation between the portuguese architects with the restrictions imposed at the architecture during Estado Novo (ditatorial governement), in Portugal. For the present study, the typology of the Palácios da Justiça (courts) was selected because it is a program that transmits a strong symbolic load to the population and of buildings with specific architectural characteristics (as the scale), which impose themselves in the urban environment and indicate the power of the Estado Novo in the cities. In the period under study (1950s, 60s and 70s) and in the response to this program, an architect stands out for his work of public order, which leaves an important mark for the future of portuguese architecture - Januário Godinho. The investigation was based primarily on the collection of dispersed documentary information in order to create a reading of portuguese architecture during the dictatorial period, producing a basis of interpretation for the further study of the problems, political restrictions and solutions presented for the concrete case of the Palácios de Justiça, where it was possible to interpret Januário Godinho's contribution by confronting the response to this program with the analysis of other public buildings carried out in the same urban context. As case studies were selected buildings built in the cities of Ovar, Amarante and Chaves; in the final part of this work, the courts are compared with the Municipal Markets, in the first, and with Bouvette of the Thermal Baths, in the latter. |
