Social networks are a source of information and social interactions essential to the construction of knowledge. Today all scientific communities, universities, companies use social networks in some way. In this dissertation, we study the potential of monitoring social networks for the creation and sharing of important information to stimulate research in Information Systems (IS). Social media monitoring (MRS) is a field of recent research. The MRS associated with research on emerging research topics has not yet been deeply studied. MRS is often associated with monitoring network behaviours, anticipating consumer trends, and identifying issues of a diverse nature. In our study, we identified that MRS can bring important advantages to scientific communities such as the Portuguese Association of Information Systems (APSI-PTAIS). The APSI-PTAIS is the context of this study; is a scientific association that brings together researchers from most of the Universities and Polytechnic Institutes of Portugal. The research carried out by its members is focused on emerging phenomena in the area of IS, seeking to study, explain and predict these phenomena, in order to provide solutions to recurrent problems and promote the innovation of products, services and processes. Rapid scientific and technological advances as well as the global dimension of current research bring to APSI-PTAIS members greater difficulties in anticipating, monitoring and detecting emerging research topics as well as in identifying international communities that study them. The objective of this study is to understand how MRS can help in the detection of emerging research topics for this community and how this can collaborate with other international communities. To accomplish this goal, a parameterized MRS tool was used to detect the research topics. The result was positive, and through it a set of recommendations was built for the use of MRS in the research of emerging research topics. |
