With the focus in the Portuguese Certified Accountants Association [Ordem dos Contabilistas Certificados (OCC)] in Portugal, there is a code of ethics for accounting professionals in order to homogenize values and guide the behavior of professionals in their professional activity. However, the existence of infractions and punishments by the accountants shows that in practice the Code of Ethics is not always fulfilled by all professionals and, in this sense, the motto for the present dissertation appears. Thus, the central objective is to understand the perception of accounting professionals about the adoption of the Code of Ethics in the exercise of the activity and to understand what factors influence and in what way influence the adoption of the Code. Through the quantitative method, it can be seen that, in terms of gender, the male sex has more ethical behavior than the female sex, however, the difference in values is not statistically significant, so it is concluded that gender is not an influencing factor of the Code of Ethics. Note that the statistic statistically proved that the other factors under analysis, age, a formation and the years of experience are influencing factors. In terms of age, the older the certified accountants the greater the likelihood of performing unwanted behaviors. As far as literacy is concerned, the study concluded that the higher the level of education of the accountant, the more ethical are their behaviors. Finally, one has the factor associated with the professional experience of the respondent. In this case, it is proven that the greater the number of years of experience, the less ethical are the behaviors of the accountant. Thus, it is concluded that the OCC's Code of Ethics has a great reputation being considered by the majority of accountants as "convenient" for the profession, as it is seen as a behavioral guide. In terms of factors influencing adoption of the Code: age, training and experience are factors that effectively influence the adoption of the Code. |
