Compromisso com a paz: propostas educativas dos protestantes portugueses no post I Guerra Mundial

Abstract

Pretendemos com esta reflexão identificar e analisar a receção e reação das comunidades protestantes portuguesas, quer ao rebentar do conflito que dividiu a Europa entre 1914 e 1918 – a I Guerra Mundial –, quer nas sequelas humanas e geopolíticas do conflito. Seguiremos, através de imprensa protestante, por um lado, as principais manifestações de denúncia do conflito por parte dos metodistas, dos presbiterianos e dos elementos da Igreja Lusitana, seriando os argumentos então aduzidos, e naturalmente captaremos a adesão às posições de Portugal quando lhe é declarada guerra pelos Alemães; e, por outro lado, rastrearemos as fases de mobilização dessas mesmas comunidades, reservando particular atenção ao modo como difundiram as propostas humanitárias e ecuménicas ensaiadas nas frentes de batalha e como essas lições estruturam o modelo educacional disseminado após o Armistício.

With this reflection, we intend to identify and analyze the reception and reaction of the portuguese protestant communities, in both the outbreak of the conflict that divided Europe between 1914 and 1918 – the I World War –, and the human and geopolitical sequelae of conflict. We will follow, through the Protestant press, on the one hand, as the Methodists, the Presbyterians and the elements of the Lusitanian Church, the main manifestations of denunciation of the conflict, mapping out the arguments, and of course we will capture adherence to the positions of Portugal when it is declared war by the Germans; and, on the other hand, we will trace the phases of mobilization of these same communities, with particular attention being paid to both how the humanitarian and ecumenical proposals tested on the battle fronts and how these lessons structure the educational model disseminated after the Armistice.
