ameaçada e tendem a reafirmar o padrão problemático.
Ambivalence can be perceived as a cyclic movement between two opposing positions of the Self – one expressing change and another expressing stability, even if it is a dysfunctional stability. When patients begin to conceive new ways of facing the problem, they might feel their stability threatened and tend to reaffirm the problematic pattern. This phenomenon has been recently studied empirically by identifying Ambivalence Markers. The goal of this study was to explore and analyse the evolution of the ambivalence in psychotherapy using the Unified Protocol for the Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders, in a successful treatment case. For that a sample of pre-selected sessions was coded with the Ambivalence Coding System. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of the sessions was performed in order to explore the articulation between the therapeutic results and the evolution of ambivalence, considering the therapeutic focus suggested by the transdiagnosis protocol. The results suggested a decrease of ambivalence, namely in the therapeutic sessions with the focus on interoceptive and emotional exposure. This suggests that the observed improvement in the difficulties reported by the patient were related with the capacity to promote alternative ways to deal with anxiety. |
