The interest of the population in the enjoyment of museums exhibitions does not present itself as a frequent daily activity. Many people visit only museums that pertain to their local area and most of them do so through school-organized field trips. This is the reality in which the Pottery Museum, located in Barcelos, currently lives in. The capture of audiences for the Pottery Museum and the application of the great museological tendencies characteristic of a museum of the 21st century is the high priority of this project. In this way, there is a deep study of museology and museums of the 21st century; cultural policies; cultural policies in Portugal and localities. To get an effective and complete knowledge of the institution, interviews were conducted with the management and technical staff of the museum, some of the Barcelos most known craftsman and the institution’s guardianship, the Câmara Municipal de Barcelos Information was also gathered from the Documentation Center, a Pottery Museum service. The information and data obtained were reused in the execution of a Museological Plan, according to the model of the Ministry of Culture of Spain. This plan presupposes the organization of all the information inherent to the museum for a greater planning and structuring of their activities, mission and objectives. Thus, the institution’s shortcomings could be identified. Communication (as it would be expected in a service being tutored) is the main weakness detected by the implementation of the plan. There are several strategies outlined in the Museological Plan that aim to foster a better external communication of the institution, such as the existence of social networks, a greater presence in platforms for the dissemination of news such as newspapers, television programs, etc. These and other proposed measures can attract new audiences to the Pottery Museum as well as bring it closer to current museological tendencies that can turn it into a museum of the 21st century. |
