As normas de conduta e regras dos sacerdotes seculares da Igreja Católica, em Portugal, entre os séculos XIII e XXI: uma análise através dos sínodos

Abstract

A presente dissertação, elaborada no âmbito do Mestrado em História da Universidade do Minho, aduz e reflete sobre as condutas e regras impostas na vida sacerdotal secular dos clérigos da Igreja Católica, em Portugal, num período compreendido entre os séculos XIII e XXI. Primeiramente, abordaremos os métodos e argumentos utilizados pela Igreja para atrair membros à vida clerical – desde os seus benefícios e testamentos aos foros privilegiados. Seguidamente, apresentaremos as regras e condutas a que esses clérigos estavam sujeitos, utilizando para tal a informação obtida a partir do estudo dos sínodos portugueses, de forma a compreender como se deu a formação deste complexo conjunto de normas regimentais. Os sínodos serão tratados de uma perspectiva analítica-comparativa, já que nos apercebemos que, dentro da mesma instituição, o entendimento de determinadas regras tem interpretações díspares – pelo que existe, em cada bispado, uma certa autonomia, diversidade ou direcionamento próprio quanto à aplicação regimental. Por fim, dissertaremos, de forma breve, mas não menos atenta, sobre os conceitos normativos na Igreja de hoje, com o intuito de mostrar a acentuada evolução destas regras e normas de conduta. Ressalvamos ainda a importância basilar dos sínodos e concílios, que permitem normatizar, dogmatizar e conduzir a vida clerical dos sacerdotes da Igreja, no universo católico, conferindo-lhe a sua estrutura de funcionamento, bem como o caminho para a sua continuidade.

The present dissertation, elaborated in the scope of the Master Degree of History at the University of Minho, adduces and reflects on the conduct and regulation imposed in the secular priestly life of clerics of the Catholic Church in Portugal in a period between the thirteenth and twenty-first centuries. First, we shall address the methods and arguments used by the Church to attract members to the clerical life – from its benefits and wills to privileged formal charters. Next, we will present the rules and conduct to which these clerics were subject to, using information obtained from the study of Portuguese synods, in order to understand how this complex set of regimental norms was formed. Synods will be treated from an analytical-comparative perspective, as we realize that, within the same institution, the understanding of certain rules has different interpretations – so there is in each diocese a different autonomy, diversity and direction referring to the application of these regulations. Finally, we will briefly, but not less carefully, discuss the normative concepts in the Church of today, in order to show the marked evolution of these rules and norms of conduct. We also emphasize the outstanding importance of the synods and councils, which allow us to regulate, dogmatize and lead the clerical life of priests of the Catholic Church, giving it its functional scaffolding, as well as the path to its continuity.
