Searching for cultural geography in Portugal

Abstract

[Extrato] Following on previous authors of these sections (Simonsen 2003) I must stress from the start of this article that a ‘Country Report’ is a social and cultural construction, and therefore situated, embodied and partial. In that sense, I am deeply aware of the fact that I am gazing and writing from a rural area in the northwest of Portugal to what has been taking place at the centre of the discipline of Geography in Portugal (please read ‘Lisbon’), and attempting to frame it in a wider and frequently distant progress in Geography, which at times (quite often) transforms this ‘centre’ into a very peripheral location.

[Extrato] Em conformidade com outros autores destassecções (Simonsen 2004) devo sublinhar desde o início deste artigo que um ‘Country Report’ é uma construção social e cultural, e por isso mesmo situada, corpórea e parcial. Neste sentido, estou profundamente consciente do facto de que estou a reflectir e a escrever a partir de uma área rural no noroeste de Portugal sobre o que esta´ a acontecer no centro da disciplina de Geografia em Portugal (por favor leia-se ‘Lisboa’), enquanto tento enquadrar estes desenvolvimentos em mais amplos e por vezes distantes progressos da Geografia, o que por vezes (frequentemente) transformam este ‘centro’ numa localização bastante periférica.
