Abstract

Realidade e Fantasia: Espaço Narrativo e Representação no filme Beetlejuice de Tim Burton consiste na análise do filme e da sua espacialidade em função das dimensões da realidade e da fantasia. Para tal, são abordados temas recorrentes do âmbito do cinema e da arquitetura de forma a legitimar as descobertas, estando a componente escrita do trabalho dividida em três captulos, cada parte salientando uma forma diferente de relacionar e observar os temas. Existe ainda uma componente gráfica, no formato de um movable book que permite a tradução da informação obtida através do desenho. A componente escrita inicia-se na introdução da dimensão do real subacente ao filme, A Realidade, ou seja, nos elementos que podem ser observados para além da narrativa e que deste modo permitem a sua existência. As qualidades urbanas do lugar e as transformações do mesmo são o foco da primeira dimensão, ajudando na legitimidade do filme e no seu desenvolvimento. De seguida, a segunda dimensão, A Fantasia, já se insere na narrativa do filme, mais concretamente na dimensão fílmica, e analisa os dois objetos mais relevantes para a sua compreensão – a casa na colina e a maqueta de Winter River – em função das suas manipulações que conduzem à presença da fantasia no filme. Finalmente, a componente escrita finaliza na justaposição das dimensões, Realidade e Fantasia, dando ênfase aos espaços habitados pelas personagens que pertencem à realidade fílmica e à fantasia assombrada do submundo. A constante transição entre os mundos e a ambiguidade espacial que isso cria resulta na essência que define o caso de estudo. A análise das diferentes camadas que compõem o filme são essenciais para a compreensão da totalidade do objeto, possibilitando uma imersão completa na mentalidade do realizador e no processo de decisões que permitiram a existência desta obra, como algo único no jogo entre a realidade e a fantasia.

Reality and Fantasy: Narrative Space and Representation in the film Beetlejuice by Tim Burton consists of the analysis of the film and its spatiality in function of the dimensions of reality and fantasy. To this end, recurring subjects from the fields of cinema and architecture are approached to legitimize the discoveries, with the written component of the work divided in three parts, each part emphasizing a different way of relating and observing the themes. There is still a graphic component, in the form of a movable book that allows the translation of the information obtained through drawing. The written component begins with the introduction of the dimension of the real underlying the film, Reality, that is, the elements that can be observed beyond the narrative and thus allow its existence. The urban qualities of the place and its transformations are the focus of this dimension, aiding in the legitimacy of the film and its development. Then, the second dimension, Fantasy, is already included in the narrative of the film, more concretely in the filmic dimension, and analyzes the two most relevant objects for its comprehension – the house on the hill and the model of Winter River – due to its manipulations that lead to the presence of fantasy in the film. Finally, the written component ends in the juxtaposition of the dimensions, Reality and Fantasy, emphasizing the spaces inhabited by the characters that belong to the filmic reality and the haunted fantasy of the underworld. The constant transition between the worlds and the spatial ambiguity that this creates results in the essence that defines the case study. The analysis of the different layers that make up the film are essential for the comprehension of the totality of the object, allowing a complete immersion in the mentality of the director and in the process of decisions that allowed the existence of this work, as something unique in the play between reality and fantasy.
