Moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixtures: A Literature Review

Abstract

Moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixtures, generally called stripping, has been known as the biggest performance concern influ­enc­ing the dura­bil­ity of asphalt pavements. Moisture induced damage of asphalt pavement is an extremely com­pli­cated mode of dis­tress that leads to the loss of stiff­ness and struc­tural strength of the mixture and even­tu­ally to the costly maintenance of the pavement struc­ture. The main objective of this paper is to present a literature review of moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixes, to highlight the main aspects of this important topic. This review discusses different causes of moisture susceptibility, mechanisms, existing and suggested scenarios to evaluate the moisture susceptibility, and effective methods for controlling damage. As the moisture susceptibility is not well understood, this review would be useful to researchers to investigate this complex mechanism to a sufficient degree.
