Caminhos de São Bento: Santo Tirso-Vizela-Terras de Bouro

Abstract

As peregrinações sempre foram motivo de deslocação dos mais diversos povos no mundo. Na Europa, realizaram-se grandes jornadas deste tipo, proporcionando um intercâmbio cultural sem precedentes. Um dos grandes construtores desta identidade europeia foi S. Bento, de par com a difusão da sua regra beneditina. A devoção a S. Bento continua presente, por exemplo, no Noroeste de Portugal, onde é venerado no mosteiro de S. Bento (Santo Tirso), em S. Bento das Peras (Vizela) e em S. Bento da Porta Aberta (Terras de Bouro), santuários nos quais se gera uma simbiose entre o profano e o sagrado. O ato de peregrinar além de ser um testemunho de devoção, é simultaneamente uma deslocação, o que permite o seu enquadramento no turismo religioso. É esta dinâmica que, articulada com um vasto património cultural, material e imaterial, pode contribuir para a preservação de uma identidade local e regional, convocando uma cooperação entre os diversos municípios. Os “Caminhos de S. Bento”, como propomos que se venham a assinalar e a designar, além de permitirem conhecer as vivências dos devotos, dão visibilidade e rentabilidade a estruturas da caráter variado existentes nos territórios concelhios que percorrem e aos quais se refere o estudo subjacente a este Relatório de Projeto, sendo estes os aspetos que pretendemos valorizar neste trabalho.

Pilgrimages were a cause for the wandering of people of the most various origins in the world. In Europe, pilgrimages promoted cultural exchanges of huge consequences. One of the great builders of the European identity was Saint Benedict along with the diffusion of the Benedictine rule. Devotion to Saint Benedict is still present, for instance, in the Northwest of Portugal. The devotion to this saint is still very much alive in the monastery of S. Bento (Santo Tirso), in S. Bento das Peras (Vizela), and in S. Bento da Porta Aberta (Terras de Bouro). In these sanctuaries takes place a symbiosis between the profane and the sacred. The practice of the pilgrimage is both an expression of devotion and a reason for people to move from the place where they live to a sanctuary; this movement of people can be related to religious tourism. The dynamism of these pilgrimages in articulation with a vast cultural - material and immaterial - patrimony, can contribute to the preservation of a local and regional identity fostered by the cooperation of various municipalities. The “Routes of Saint Benedict”, as I propose to signal them and to call them, allow us to know how pilgrims live their devotional experiences and add to the notoriety of the varied patrimony that exists in the various municipalities where the pilgrimages I have studied take place. These are the matters I want to value with this work.
