seguro. Despite the progress made by technology and medicine, certain health professionals continue to be at risk groups in terms of susceptibility to work-related accidents, mainly due to biological and chemical risks. The operating room is precisely one of the hospital places where this type of incident occurs more frequently, being in its origin, for example the contact with contaminated organic products or the contact with the surgical instruments. However, there is a set of prevention measures that professionals can and should adopt in order to reduce risks. Responsibility for their safety lies, therefore, not only on the hospital, but also on the professionals, for whom the occupational training is not enough. They must even put vocational training into practice and understand, with the responsibility that the profession deserves, the consequences of the occurrence of accidents resulting from these risks. This dissertation will address the problematic of the risks associated with the operating room, essentially aiming to identify and analyze the biological and chemical risks inherent to it, as well as the professionals' attitudes towards them. In order to fulfill these purposes, the possible risks at an operating room will be presented, analyzing the results of a descriptive, analytical and transversal study of the reality lived in a hospital unit of northern Portugal. Eighty six professionals participated into the study through the completion of a questionnaire. The results obtained have revealed the occurrence of certain accidents, however it is verified that the safety standards and the convenient use of individual protection equipment are not always completely respected. In addition, it can be confirmed that not all professionals are trained in occupational risks, although this appears to be a factor, along with seniority and age, with no statistically significant differences associated with the occurrence of accidents. Given the results, it is suggested that professionals and the institution itself become more involved in risk prevention and, above all, in promoting a safe working environment. |
