The following research aims to investigate the presence of tragic elements in the novel Memorial do Convento by José Saramago, in the light of O Evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo. O Evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo is a novel with a clear tragic structure that has been subject of numerous studies devoted to the tragic. Therefore, we want to find out if there are traces of the tragic (not necessarily following the tragedy model) in Saramago’s work published before O Evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo (1991). Since it is impossible to analyze all of Saramago’s work before 1991, we focus on Memorial do Convento, published nine years before O Evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo, and maybe the most prominent Saramago’s novel. O Evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo will illustrate the discussion of the tragic concepts through critical reading of existing studies on the novel, and assessing their analysis in terms of theoretical approaches. This first discussion of the tragic applied to Saramago’s narrative is followed by an analysis of Memorial do Convento, our main object of study, with focus on issues as: (1) tragic evidences, taking into account characters profiles, plot elements (primary and secondary), discourse and any statements of metadiscursive character; (2) the memory of play writing, including intertextual relations with theatre; (3) and the role of music may play linked to the tragic; (4) to conclude in which ways and to what purpose tragic elements are present in Memorial do Convento. We undertake this study conscious about the fact that Memorial do Convento has no tragic plot as O Evangelho Segundo Jesus Cristo. Our aim is to find tragic elements or traces in this text and understand its functions, analogous or different from the later novel, in order to shed light on the evolution of Saramago's work.
