The constant and global climatic change is an important factor in the raising of the environmental temperature. The usage, in large scale, of surfaces with higher solar reflectance may affect the urbane microclimate, due to a smaller transfer of heat from the surfaces to the air and therefore reducing the raise of the environmental temperature and the energetic expenses due to air conditioning in cities. The goal for this dissertation is to study reflecting pigments and their thermal capacity, as well as identifying and developing analytical methods for their study. In order to analyze if the usage of these pigments improves the thermal behavior of surfaces in the solar spectrum, two different techniques were used, near infrared spectroscopy and infrared thermography, for different substrates. Some of the reflecting pigments had positive effects in the reflectivity; however others had a negative influence, due to the change in color (reflection in the visible part of the spectrum) as a result of the addition of the pigment. The thermal tests showed that several pigments that led to an increase in the reflectance did not translate into a decrease of temperature, and therefore did not show the desired effect. The reflective pigments may be used with a positive effect; however, the paint formulation must be well studied such as the impact in reflectivity for the whole spectrum and not just in the infrared part. |
