A relação entre maus-tratos e comportamentos antissociais juvenis: uma meta-análise de estudos longitudinais prospetivos

Abstract

A relação entre maus-tratos e comportamentos antissociais tem sido alvo de investigação durante décadas. Todavia, o conhecimento acerca desta associação baseia-se sobretudo em estudos empíricos independentes ou em revisões gerais das consequências dos maus-tratos ou dos fatores de risco para a delinquência. De modo a analisar criteriosa e detalhadamente a relação entre maus-tratos e comportamentos antissociais juvenis, realizámos uma meta-análise de estudos longitudinais prospetivos e explorámos efeitos de moderação. Considerámos maus-tratos gerais, abuse físico, sexual e emocional, e negligência, bem como comportamentais antissociais gerais e agressivos. Foram incluídas 37 amostras (23,973 jovens) e 69 correlações. Os resultados mostraram que os maus-tratos associam-se à prática de comportamentos antissociais juvenis e esta associação mantém-se na presença de covariáveis, como fatores de risco comuns, e perante variações metodológicas. Contudo, os maus-tratos oficiais e consequentemente mais severos e frequentes tiveram maior impacto em comportamentos antissociais oficiais e porventura de maior severidade e frequência. O abuso físico e sexual parece mais fortemente associado a atos agressivos em detrimento de gerais, enquanto jovens negligenciados apresentaram um risco acrescido de envolvimento na antissocialidade em geral. Os mecanismos causais subjacentes a estas relações divergentes merecem investigação futura, para prevenir e intervir nas consequências antissociais adversas dos maus-tratos.

The maltreatment-antisocial behavior relationship has been a focus of research for decades. However, understanding this association has been largely based on individual empirical studies or on reviews of maltreatments’ broad consequences or of delinquency’s wide range risk factors. To thoroughly examine the relationship between maltreatment and juvenile antisocial behaviors, we conducted a meta-analysis exclusively of prospective longitudinal studies and explored moderator effects. Overall maltreatment, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, and neglect were included, and general and aggressive antisocial behaviors were considered. The final data set consisted of 37 samples, including 23,973 youth, and 69 correlations. Results showed that maltreatment is associated with higher rates of juvenile antisocial behaviors, and the relationship holds in the presence of potential confounders, as common risk factors, and methodological variations. Nonetheless, official and hence more severe and frequent maltreatment had a greater impact on official and possibly more serious and frequent antisocial acts. Furthermore, sexual and physical abuse seemed more strongly linked to aggressive rather than general antisocial behaviors, while neglected youth seemed to have an increased risk of general antisocial involvement. The causal mechanisms underlying these dissimilar relationships warrant further research, to prevent and intervene on the adverse antisocial consequences of maltreatment.
