The fast changes occurring in the world lead to a rapid modification in the field of education and in particular in science education. This field is now recognized as essential for the development of individuals aware of the world around them and with skills that allow them to easily adapt and respond to new situations and challenges. Educational policies target an interdisciplinary and active learning, where students should solve problems through research and teachers should only be responsible for guiding them. They propose the development of individuals with curious, creative, and autonomous throughout life. These policies propose the use of non-formal or informal activities, where students should interact actively on the learning process and should be involved with all the educational community to improve their education. Despite these indications, throughout this thesis it will be demonstrated that teachers and schools apply different types of non-formal and informal activities and recognize that investigative activities are advantageous for skill development and student learning. However, these activities are also underdeveloped. The reasons for that are mainly related to both lack of time and students expertise. Due to pressure from parents and society for good grades, schools forget that scientific literacy is not built on only solving problems on paper. We organized training workshops on science projects development, where we fight some of the difficulties felt by the teachers. We created different resources for practical use and try to combat the myth that implementing science projects in class and participating in science fairs is only possible with excellent students and rich schools. It was found that participation in the Science Fair motivated positively over 90% of students, contradicting trends that major prizes are needed to lead students to participate. We also concluded that it is possible to promote the learning of concepts through science fairs, as well to develop attitudinal and procedural skills. The following of former students reinforced this view, since they have shown that science fairs brought them benefits on both learning concepts and acquiring skills useful not only in the classroom but also for understanding everyday phenomena. We conclude that you can integrate activities of investigative nature into science education in the scope of science fairs, thereby contributing to a paradigm shift and better education. In the first two chapters of the dissertation we present the context of this thesis and the theoretical framework. Chapter three is dedicated to the implementation of different non-formal and informal activities, specifically investigative activities. Chapter four deals with the creation of a training workshop, for teachers, on the development of science projects in the classroom and the organization of science fairs. The fifth and sixth chapters are devoted to science fairs organization at a local and national level, ending with the general conclusions of this work and further study suggestions.
