João de Guimarães Golias, o homem e o diplomata (1599-1653)

Abstract

João de Guimarães (1599-1653) foi um notável agente diplomático de D. João IV. Com uma formação em Leis, o seu percurso levou-o a desempenhar funções de relevo no quadro da política externa da Restauração. Enviado para Estocolmo, na qualidade de secretário, na 2.ª embaixada portuguesa à Suécia, aí irá permanecer, durante alguns anos, como residente. Mais tarde, irá deslocar-se a Inglaterra, na qualidade de enviado, tendo sido recebido no Parlamento Inglês. Homem consciente e cristão, de uma importante família vimaranense, onde nasceu, as suas ligações e interesses incluíam importantes instituições da vila, como era o caso da Colegiada de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. Reconhecido por alguns como o impulsionador do comércio entre Suécia e Portugal, este homem terá privado com a Rainha Cristina, herdeira de um dos tronos mais importantes na Europa do século XVII. O que escreveu sobre o que viu e sobre os negócios diplomáticos de que tratou são uma importante fonte para observar a política, a economia e até a cultura seiscentista de ambos os espaços europeus, Portugal e Suécia. Menos bafejado pela sorte em Inglaterra, foi obrigado a abandonar o país, à época governado pelo general Oliver Cromwell. As vicissitudes das negociações diplomáticas e a sua vida atribulada terão deixado a sua marca em João de Guimarães, o qual, pouco depois de ter regressado, faleceu, na cidade de Lisboa, em 1653.

João de Guimarães (1599-1653) was an ambassador of the Portuguese king John the 4th. With a college degree in Law School by the University of Coimbra, he took part in one of the most important areas in the Portuguese Restoration (1640): the diplomacy. Sent to the Swedish sovereign’s residence, Stockholm, he started as secretary of the portuguese ambassador Rodrigo Botelho de Morais. Later he had another mission to England, where he had an audition in the English Parliament. A Christian men, very conscious, his family had a position of trust in most important institutions of the 17th century Guimarães, from where he was natural. João de Guimarães was one of the men which contacted directly with Queen Christina of Sweden and is considered to be one of the persons which stimulated a more persistent trading between Portugal and Swedish territory. His letters written from his first diplomatic mission at Sweden are an excellent contribution to the Portuguese Diplomatic Relationships History, but also to Swedish History considering his commentaries in scandinavian politics, economy and culture. In his 2nd assignment in 1650-1651, this time in London, he was forced to leave the country ruled at the time by general Oliver Cromwell. Negotiating brought many weariness to João de Guimarães, which was deceased in Lisbon, on 1653. The life and work of this portuguese ambassador is one of many that allow us to analyze 17th century Europe from a political perspective, and help us understand the diplomatic relationships at the time.
