Os séniores e as sociedades em rede. Um estudo sobre a exclusão social na terceira idade

Abstract

Uma das realidades prementes do mundo contemporâneo tem a ver com o envelhecimento global. A par deste envelhecimento generalizado da população, a taxa de natalidade também tem vindo a diminuir, alterando significativamente a demografia das sociedades contemporâneas. Outro fenómeno que tem vindo a aumentar de forma exponencial, e que cada vez vai ganhando mais protagonismo no seio das relações sociais, é a Internet. Embora o acesso a este novo meio de comunicação seja transversal a todas as faixas etárias, a participação por parte de indivíduos com 60 ou mais anos apenas se tem acentuado de forma significativa nos últimos anos. Alguns estudos realizados sobre os efeitos da Internet nas sociedades contemporâneas indicam que os seus utilizadores revelam uma maior satisfação no seu dia-a-dia, muitas vezes associada a uma interação social mais intensa com a família e amigos. Por outro lado, outros estudos associam esse uso a uma descida no nível de comunicação com os membros da família provocando um aumento da depressão e solidão, afetando negativamente a sociabilidade offline. Neste sentido, o conjunto de dados disponíveis até à data não sustenta a tese de que a utilização da Internet possa conduzir a um maior ou menor isolamento social na terceira idade, havendo sim alguns indícios que, em determinadas circunstâncias, possa agir como substituto de certas atividades sociais. Embora os resultados obtidos pareçam indicar sinais de menor exclusão social nos seniores que utilizam da Internet, os mesmos dados parecem também revelar que indicadores como o rendimento e as habilitações podem estar a influenciar esses mesmos resultados, podendo assim indicar que o uso da Internet, na terceira idade, poderá ainda não estar devidamente democratizado.

One of the current realities in contemporary societies lies in the global aging of population. Alongside this overall aging of society, we have also been witnessing a decline in the birth rate that significantly changes the demographics of contemporary societies. Another phenomenon that has also been increasing exponentially, and that is gaining more prominence within the social relations is the Internet. However, although the adherence to this new media occurs in all age groups, the access by individuals over 60 years has only become more acute in recent years. Some studies on the effects of the Internet in contemporary societies indicate that their users show a higher satisfaction in their day -to-day life, often associated with a more intense social interaction with family and friends. On the other hand, other studies associate this use to a fall in the level of communication with family members, causing an increase of depression and loneliness, affecting negatively offline sociability. Given this dichotomy, we can conclude that the data available does not support the thesis that Internet use leads to a more or less social isolation in the third age, but evidence that, in certain circumstances, can act as a substitute for certain social activities. Although the results seem to indicate signs of lower social exclusion in the seniors that use the Internet, the same data also seem to show that indicators, such as income and qualifications, may be influencing such outcomes, what may indicate that the use of the Internet in the third age, maybe not be yet fully democratized.
