Metamorfoses de um espaço urbano: a zona arqueológica da R. Afonso Henriques n.ºs 42 a 56, em Braga

Abstract

Este artigo analisa a sequência de ocupação registada nas escavações realizadas em 1998 e 2002 no miolo de um quarteirão da área do Centro Histórico de Braga, identificado pelos n.ºs 42 e 56 da R. Afonso Henriques. Os trabalhos de arqueologia preventiva aí realizados permitiram identificar vestígios integrados num quarteirão da cidade romana, pertencentes a uma domus, construída em meados do século I, arrasada no século II para a construção de umas termas públicas, que se mantiveram em funcionamento até ao século V. Os sucessivos saques dos muros do edifício datam da Alta e Baixa Idade Média e poderão associar-se à construção das sucessivas cercas medievais erguidas nas imediações da área intervencionada. A ausência de construções posteriores à Antiguidade Tardia assinala a transformação da área em logradouro, anexo às casas que compunham um dos quarteirões do medieval Bairro das Travessas que persistiu na trama urbana da cidade de Braga até à segunda metade do século XIX.

This paper analyzes the sequence of occupation registered in the excavations conducted in 1998 and 2002 in the core of a block in the area of the historic center of Braga, identified as ‘R. Afonso Henriques, 42-56’. The preventive archaeological works allowed to identify architectonic remains integrated within a block of the Roman city, belonging to a domus built in the middle of the first century and razed in the second century for the construction of a public thermal building, which remained operational until the fifth century. The successive looting of the walls date back from the High and Late Middle Ages and may be linked to the construction of the successive medieval walls erected in the vicinity of the area under study. The absence of constructions after Late Antiquity highlights the transformation of the area in a backyard attached to the houses composing one of the medieval blocks of ‘Bairro das Travessas’, which persisted in the urban layout of the city of Braga until the second half of the nineteenth century.
