Quinta-feira no mercado Britânico.
The aim of this thesis is the study of the relation between the investment risk in capital markets, represented by the implied volatility, and some market factors that are usually quoted as good models of the economic and financial environment. To fulfil this objective it was performed a linear regression analysis in which the last ones were the variables used to explain the first. The sample period is comprised between 2002 and 2013 for both the US and the UK markets. The implied volatility was obtained through traded on exchange options on the S&P 500 and FTSE 100 indices and on volatility indices based on the previous equities indices. At the selected period were available values for the options with 1, 3 and 6 months maturities. After that, it was analysed a tighter time period, for which was available data related to options with different maturities (2, 9, 12, 24 and 36 months). The results emphasize the importance of the domestic indices contemporaneous and lagged returns in the volatility dynamic. Moreover, they showed a high connection of the external indices contemporaneous returns to volatility. However, by applying other factors that describe the communication between markets, it was possible to find that the use of alternative proxies can generate different conclusions. It was also discovered a relation between the implied volatility and the domestic index trading volume in both markets and the interest rate term structure and oil prices in the UK. The study of the day of the week effect revealed a significant difference between Monday and the subsequent days in the USA and between Thursday and the remaining days in the UK. The study of the initial’s regression’s adjustment and of new regression’s adjustment with the single inclusion of the contemporaneous returns of the internal index revealed that the exclusion of the remaining factors did not decreased, in an expressive way, the regression’s adjustment. Also, the analysis of the initial regression’s parameters stability highlighted the value of the internal index. Lastly, the study of the period where all the option’s maturities were available showed the importance of the internal and external indices returns in the relation with volatility. This last evidence summarizes the essential results obtained in this dissertation. |
