A metodologia utilizada
Fiscal consolidation has implied a decrease of Social Security benefits with an asymmetric distribution among the population. The perception that families have on the impact of reforms to the pension´s system is crucial for two main reasons: to assure adequate retirement savings and the success of government policies. There is evidence that financial literacy is important in both cases. This study aims to investigate Portuguese people’s habits and how the pensions system or the expectations in relation to its evolution affect those habits. The methodology used focused on the elaboration of an online survey and the estimation of a discrete choice model of the determinants of saving. The survey was released in all Universities and Polytechnic Institutes of Portugal and in some social networks. 809 valid questionnaires were gathered, majority (61%) of which were from female individuals and the average age was 32 years old. The econometric model used was the probit model and its binary response variable was the probability of an individual to save. The independent variables used were: age, gender, income, marital status, education, professional situation, number of children, mortgaged or rented property, the existence of debts, expectations of income and future retirement benefits and level of financial literacy. The variable that evaluates future retirement benefits expectations did not indicate statistical significance, which contradicts our initial hypothesis. The probability of an individual to save decreases for married individuals, with children, with debts, unemployed or inactive. It increases for individuals with higher education and financial literacy levels, as indicated in the existing literature. The probability of an individual to save decreases with age until, approximately, 52 years of age, from which begins to increase. |
