All professional top sports teams are increasing their use of the Internet as a big part of their marketing strategy. Among the instruments, social media is on top of the preferences. Well known platforms, like Facebook, Youtube and Twitter, are being used to deliver team information, to connect directly with team supporters and above all to engage with them. This relates to the fact that social media implementation in the marketing process is normally perceived as being inexpensive, easily communicated to the public, and with the advantage of delivering real time feedback. The major Portuguese professional sports teams are no exception on this marketing trend. They all have official social media pages, where they directly interact with the followers in a sort of ways. This dissertation specifically aimed to study the particular cases of FC Porto and SC Braga. A quantitative study was developed. In order to operationalize the constructs under study, one scale was imported: Sports Consumer-Team relationship Quality Scale (SCTRQS) developed by Kim et al, (2011). Data was collected through surveys. By calculating MANOVA´s (Multivariate analysis of variance) and MANCOVA´s (Multivariate analysis of covariance), diferences were analysed between the groups under study. The aim was to understand if there were differences in the relation with the brand, between fans that have subscrived the club oficial page and those who have not subscrived. The results indicated that the impact of social media marketing strategies on the quality of the fans-brand/club relationships were not so effective as was expected. This dissertation presented some clues that can explain why this is happening. One might be the lack of experience of these sports clubs on these type of iniciatives. Another reason might be that sports teams are implementing push marketing strategies, when they should be working the fanship through an objective stimulation of word-of-mouth strategies. |
