The tourism sector is based on a sort of business networking. The way that the business network of a particular sector develops, directly influences how companies position themselves in the market, the way they compete and establish strategies alone or together with other businesses (Porter, 1987) and thus developing synergies. Tourism acts as an engine for development in developed countries; however, it is an activity highly sensitive to external factors. This dissertation is focusing on the Business Tourism, Congresses and Events segment, which was recently renamed to Meetings Industry (MI), and is currently identified as a segment with substantial weight for the economy and the industry sector of hospitality. The object of this work is to understand if the crisis is a major factor for the hotel groups’ strategic redefinition and formulation. In times of crisis it is, at the same time, an open door for new opportunities and companies will have adapt and create conditions to develop their business in a sustainable manner. This influences the strategic planning that allows them to invest when there are negative cycles and saving resources. This exploratory study employs triangulation to understand the relationships established within hotel companies, identifying partnerships that will generate longterm value and how it the strategy is reshaped as a result of the economic crisis. This mixed methodology combines qualitative research with quantitative research, through the use of interviews, whose results will be compared with those obtained from questionnaires. The study revealed that Portugal clearly has the conditions to become a destination of success for business tourism. However the country needs to invest more into the promotion and communication. The private sector and the government will have to make a combined effort in order to improve the image with the goal of Portugal becoming a sustainable international business tourism destination. |
