tempo. Teachers often refer students’ reading problems as one of the most important causes of their failure at school. Students read more and more, however they understand less and less. On the one hand students can successfully deal with new communication techniques, but on the other hand they struggle when they read. Many are unable to select information so as to take advantage out of it to build their own knowledge in a critical way. They are often unable to understand what they read and therefore they don’t involve reading in their knowledge acquisition processes. The big problem doesn’t rely in their ability to read and write while using new communication techniques, however in their ability in using them in different contexts and in speaking. This dissertation aims at identifying teachers’ conceptions about students’ reading difficulties and their causes so as to minimize them and help building critical readers, able to face their society, able to read different texts, in different languages and with different supports by being also able to interact with other reading experiences and, by doing so, develop their critical point of view. The study is based on a questionnaire in which teachers from different content areas are inquired about reading activities they develop in their classes; they also stated their opinions about student’s reading skills, their comprehension difficulties and their causes of such problems. The answers might go more or less in the same direction as certain studies have already stated. Although teachers have more and more access to technologies in their classrooms, they still go on using a very traditional teaching method, eg. book, blackboard, worksheets, formative tests, tests, among others, and teaching ends up being more centred on the teacher him-/herself than on students, and this way, taking them away the possibility of taking a more active role in the teaching-learning process. Teachers make students tasks too easy and, by doing so, they end up making it impossible for them to build their own knowledge based on research, debate, questioning and applying it. Some teachers are aware of that reality and would like to try out other more attractive and less reducing methods, but, unfortunately, they can’t, because they are obliged to accomplish a certain curriculum in a very short period of time. |
