The studies on ethno mathematics performed in Portugal are still very few and this can be an important element in the success of mathematics in Portugal. So it seemed important to make an inquiry that made the link between geometric transformations and Valentine’s scarves from Vila Verde, allowing perhaps in the future their use in the classroom. In order to do so there was a collection of information of the tradition of the valentine’s scarves in Vila Verde, including conversation with people who are deeply connected to this tradition and a photographic collection of the largest possible number of the valentine’s scarves. The guiding questions of the research, to which we try to answer, were: - What symmetries exist in Valentine’s scarves globally? - What symmetries may be found in valentine’s scarves globally after zeroing particular aspects? - Is it possible that the construction methods or the intended function influence the symmetry of the valentine’s scarves? From the analysis of the valentine’s scarves it was possible to categorize them as to the number of symmetries found and to relate the number of symmetries with the function they were destined. A short frame of the use of the valentine’s scarves is made on 1.º CEB but this investigation intends to be the starting point for its application on practice. |
