O imaginário português : estereótipos de Portugal e dos portugueses nas lendas populares

Abstract

Língua e cultura formam um par indissociável, na medida em que aprender uma língua não significa apenas dominar as suas estruturas formais, mas implica também o conhecimento da cultura veiculada por essa mesma língua. Aprender uma língua estrangeira é também navegar por tradições e histórias enraizadas na realidade social e cultural dos falantes dessa língua. Todavia, sabendo que as tradições culturais e históricas de um povo encerram um universo de conceitos e ideias que podem induzir em enganos, desentendimentos e juízos parciais sobre esse povo, nesta dissertação pretendeu-se apurar se existe reprodução de estereótipos a partir da interpretação de lendas populares portuguesas. Constatou-se que as lendas populares são agentes ativos de transmissão de estereótipos culturais mas que não desencadeiam necessariamente ideias erradas sobre o povo português, desde que a sua leitura seja regulada pela ação de mediação do professor de língua estrangeira, tendo em conta o contexto de diversidade cultural em que se move. Através do estudo de um corpus selecionado de lendas portuguesas e de autores cujo pensamento teórico se debruça sobre a identidade portuguesa, procurou-se identificar processos identitários, contextualizando-os na tentativa de determinar traços identificadores do “ser português” e de avaliar até que ponto tais traços se ancoram no reduto do estereótipo. Ao mesmo tempo, a intenção subjacente a este estudo foi também refletir sobre a importância da literatura na prática pedagógica do ensino do português língua não materna, bem como contribuir para a clarificação do que deve ser o perfil do agente difusor e mediador de conhecimentos - o professor de português língua não materna -, num mundo plural.

Language and culture form an inseparable pair, to the extent that learning a language means not only dominating formal structures, but it also implies the knowledge of the culture portrayed by that same language. Learning a foreign language invites the learner to navigate by traditions and stories rooted in the social and cultural reality of the speakers of that language. Knowing that the cultural and historical traditions of a people contain a universe of concepts and ideas that can induce in deception, disagreements and partial judgments on this people, this thesis sought to establish whether there is playback of stereotypes from the interpretation of Portuguese folk legends. It was noted that the folk legends are active agents of transmission of cultural stereotypes but that does not trigger necessarily wrong ideas about the Portuguese people, provided that one’s reading is regulated by the action of mediation of the professor of foreign language, taking into account the context of cultural diversity. Through the study of a selected corpus of Portuguese legends and authors whose theoretical ideas are focused on the Portuguese identity, this study sought to list identity processes, contextualizing them in an attempt to determine the features of "being" Portuguese and to assess to what extent such traces anchor in stronghold of the stereotype. At the same time, the intention behind this study was also to reflect on the importance of literature in the pedagogical practice of teaching Portuguese as a foreign language, as well as to contribute to the clarification of what must be the agent and mediator’s profile of knowledge - the professor of Portuguese as a foreign language -, in a plural world.
