Católicos e política a partir da imprensa conservadora bracarense : o Centro Católico Português (1915-1926)

Abstract

Procurar-se com este trabalho, fazer uma análise da realidade política da época espelhada na imprensa conservadora da cidade de Braga. Igualmente será nosso intento, compreender as ressonâncias do movimento organizativo católico, corporizado essencialmente pela atividade do Centro Católico Português, recorrendo à imprensa bracarense. Consultamos dois periódicos conservadores da cidade para o efeito: o “Comércio do Minho” e o “Diário do Minho” entre 1915 e 1926. Temos como objetivo perpassar as grandes questões políticas de então, cujo reflexo se encontra patente nos jornais analisados. A República e a implantação do seu projeto causam mutações visíveis em todo o país. Apesar dessas transformações serem mais expressivas nas grandes cidades como Lisboa e Porto, a província não ficou alheia às medidas tomadas pelos sucessivos Governos tendo uma voz crítica veiculada através da imprensa. Através das notícias e artigos analisados conseguimos, não só compreender a dinâmica do associativismo católico, por via do Centro Católico, assim como os grandes combates internos e externos travados por esta organização. Ora com republicanos radicais (no plano externo) ora com oposicionistas monárquicos (no plano interno) o Centro Católico será protagonista, nos anos da nossa pesquisa, de uma acesa luta não só no que toca à defesa dos interesses católicos mas também no que se refere à posição politico-ideológica dos seus militantes.

The purpose of this work, based upon research on various sources, is to make an analysis on the political situation of the time, which is mirrored in the conservative press of the city of Braga. Also, it is our intent, to understand the resonances of the catholic organizational movement, mainly embodied by the activity of the Centro Católico Português (Portuguese Catholic Center), by turning attention to the press of Braga. To this effect, we have turned attention to two conservative daily papers: the “Comércio do Minho” and the “Diário do Minho” between 1915 and 1926. Our goal is to do an extensive report on the important political matters of the time, whose implications are clearly stated on the analyzed papers. The Republic and the implementation of its project have caused visible mutations throughout the country. Despite these changes have been more clearly felt in the major cities like Lisbon and Porto, the countryside did not go unnoticed to the measures taken by the successive governments, having a critical and standing voice through the press. Through the analysis of the news and articles we were able, not only to understand the dynamics of catholic corporate associations, via Centro Católico (Catholic Center), as well as the great internal and external fights, fought by this organization. Being against republican radicals (on the external plan) or by monarchical opposition (on the internal plan) the Centro Católico will assume a central position, within the time frame of our research, in an intense fight, regarding not only the defense of catholic interests, but also the political and ideological position of its members.
