O povoamento no vale do rio Este do Neolítico à Idade Média: estudo preliminar

Abstract

O objectivo deste trabalho foi elaborar um primeiro ensaio de síntese sobre o povoamento no vale do rio Este, entre o Neolítico e a Idade Média, definindo como área de estudo o território a sul da cidade de Braga, incluindo parte da bacia hidrográfica do rio Este, e os seus afluentes, rios Veiga e Guisande. Procuramos, com este estudo, actualizar os conhecimentos sobre esta região e reunir dados que possam motivar ulteriores investigações. Os dados disponíveis sobre a ocupação humana na região em estudo limitam-se a algumas dezenas de sítios arqueológicos e achados isolados identificados, dos quais pouco se conhece, e a algumas referências em documentos escritos. Iniciamos este estudo reunindo todos os dados referentes ao território a estudar. Para isso procedemos a um inventário de todos os sítios e achados isolados, ao levantamento da toponímia e à recolha de dados em fontes documentais e históricas. Terminada a recolha e tratamento dos dados, procedemos ao seu estudo cruzando a informação obtida de modo a analisar o esquema de povoamento no território em análise desde a Pré-história recente até aos finais da Idade Média. O estudo que realizámos permite-nos afirmar que neste território, à semelhança do que acontece nos vales dos rios Cávado e Ave, a mancha de povoamento com maior densidade de vestígios de ocupação humana ocorre nos vales, durante a Época Romana e a Idade Média. De igual modo, na Idade do Bronze verifica-se uma maior concentração de vestígios nas elevações de média altitude, e no Bronze Final e Idade do Ferro, nas elevações mais destacadas na paisagem.

The purpose of this study was to elaborate a preliminary synthesis concerning the landscape occupation in the Este river valley, between the Neolithic and the Middle Ages, defining as areas of study the territory south of the city of Braga, including part of the hydrological basin of the Este river, and its tributaries, rivers Veiga and Guisande. With this work we seek to update our knowledge about these regions and assemble all the data available, so that we can motivate further investigations. The available data concerning the human occupation regarding the focused region included only a few dozens of archaeological sites and isolated findings, about which we know very little, and also a few references in written documents. We began this study by collecting all the data referring to the territory under analyses. First we proceeded to an inventory of all the sites and isolated findings, then the recording of the toponymy, and the assemblage of the information available in the documental and historic sources. Following the assemblage and treatment of the data, we crossed the information gathered in order to analyze the scheme of the human occupation in the Este river valley, starting in the Neolithic and Chalcolithic, until the end of the Middle Ages. This study allows us to say that, in the Este river valley, as in the Cávado and Ave river valleys, the areas with the highest density of traces of human occupation are the valleys during the Roman Period and the Middle Ages. Likewise, in the Bronze Age the highest concentration of archaeological evidences occur in the mean altitude elevations and during the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age in the most prominent elevations of the landscape.
