do conhecimento.
subsequente desenvolvimento. A simbiose ensino/aprendizagem é abordada no Capítulo 4, o
The major premise of this work stands on the principle of the convenience – or rather, the conviction of the necessity – of beginning from very early on, that is, from the age of 5/6 years, stimulating logical-abstract reasoning in the child’s mind by means of mathematical concepts and algorithms, imparted in the same natural mode by which the young of different animal species acquire their particular behavior and skills, indispensable for their survival: through observation of adults and through play. Why shouldn’t it be so with our own species? Following the positive experience gained from an earlier action in which – in playful and relaxed surroundings –, pre-schooling children were subjected to the ideas and concepts of mathematics, we developed an extracurricular project “O Continhas”, implemented by means of “Objetos de Aprendizagem” (Learning Objects), specially built activities programmed to achieve the intended goals of transmitting mathematical ideas and developing habits of abstract reasoning. Acknowledging that the accomplishment of the intended objectives would depend essentially upon the teachers directly involved with the project, they were subjected to specific training in order to enable them to apply the “Objetos de Aprendizagem”. This thesis consists of three distinct parts, the first of which establishes the guiding principles of our proposal. Thus, Chapter 2 deals with the role of mathematics in the society of knowledge. The studies on the human brain (Chapter 3) which grant hopes that its exposition to mathematics will reflect positively on its overall subsequent development. The teaching/learning symbiosis is treated in Chapter 4, which touching on infant apprenticeship of mathematics, leads to the consideration of teachers’ formation in that area (Chapter 5). The second part begins with the investigation of the environment existing in the pre-schooll and four first years of formal learning with respect to mathematics (Chapters 6 and 7). The last part takes up the constitution of the extracurricular project “O Continhas” (Chapters 8, 9 and 10), and of the methods purposefully created for the evaluation of the children’s results (Chapter 11), and, finally, of the conclusions attained, as well as of the inferences withdrawn up to the present (Chapter 12). In the Annexes are included some of the “Objetos de Aprendizagem” utilized in the “O Continhas”. |
