For over a hundred years, radio was, simply put, sound. But when the web came, radio changed by merging features from both media. We can still be listening to radio, but we can also be viewers and readers: it became a new medium, hypermedia and interactive, just like all the others, newspapers or TV networks alike. So-called convergence tends to dilute the former distinction, but is this, really, that simple? With this research we want to know if, as it happens with traditional radio where sound has been playing a central role in the natural expressiveness of radiophonic language, it is still, or not anymore, a defining element of cyber-radio, thus contributing to build an identity of radio on the internet. Our analysis deals with whether the sound is, then, a decisive element of differentiation between cyber-radio and other cyber-media, by promoting a web extension of radio’s original essence. Maybe because of its ephemeral and volatile character, radio is the least studied from all media. A recent surge in both analytical and scientific articles on the subject followed radio’s web migration during the closing years of the 20th century. But it doesn’t mean we now know more about the ‘new’ radio than we ever knew about the ‘old’ one. A whole lot of the scientific output has been centered much more on what cyber-radio should or shouldn’t be, than on learning what has it really been. Studying trends has often been substituted by no more than a projection of dreams about the future of radio that tended to merely emphasize the potentialities offered by the new media environments or by the available technologies. From an apocalyptical threat that would declare the inevitable end to radio, internet is now being regarded as the ultimate opportunity to develop everything the ether failed to accomplish in earlier times. The invisible, purely audible medium seems, then, to discover on the internet the ways to overcome its traditional limitations. We wouldn’t be speaking here of a mere renovation or reinvention, but of a whole new medium open to full discovery, experimentation and construction: a new radio. In a time when Portuguese radio websites are exploring change and pursuing innovative solutions, we think the door is open for a new perception on what radio really is, on the internet, and how it is evolving, focusing mainly on the its journalistic contents. We, then, studied the main headline news on the opening webpages of four national radio networks (TSF, RR, RDP and RCP). During a period of two years, data was collected in order to allow us to build and analyze profiles for the audio usage, internet radio journalism and cyber-radio, thus helping us to reflect and propose possible trends and tendencies.
