This case study with an essentially qualitative approach aligns with the research in the field of students’ cognitive progression in History, trying to analyze how students’ historical think is built. The study involved students attending two 9 th grade classes, in Agrupamento de Escolas de Freixo in 2011-2012, and it was carried out in the classroom context. The pilot study took place in one of the classes and was used mainly to improve the instruments to be implemented in the final study. The methodology employed was that of the “workshops class” since it was our intention to realize the extension of the students’ conceptual changes from the beginning to the end of the implementation. Diverse learning situation were used during the students’ work, two of them being individual and group work. During the tasks we used two diverse learning situations: .the individual work and group work. With the data collected from the questionnaire answers and the historical narratives we produced several charts of analysis witch necessarily reflect the influence of researchers whose reading we privileged. With the qualitative data analysis we proceeded to their categorization according to the researching questions and reflecting the literature in the field, the substantive concepts focused and the temporal relations established. We also proceeded to a plain content analysis conveyed by the students’ narratives, which allowed us to make same inferences related to the research questions, which allowed us to make same inferences, related to the research questions. The results revealed that most students built historically plausible explanations for the questions posed to them, having used the historical sources at diverse levels of evidence, including that of inferential reasoning. Concerning the narratives produced we can say that they reflect little a sophisticated historical thinking, the causal and the multiperspectivated explanations not appearing very often. Finally, by engaging students in their learning process through a self-monitoring task, we reached some conclusions about how they look at the present and perspective the future, as well as what level of consciousness they reveal about their own learning. |
