A pergunta
Contudo,
The aim of this study is to understand which posture the elementary school teachers assume in the promotion of mathematical communication in the classroom, looking for answers to the questions: (a) How do elementary school teachers promote mathematical communication in their classroom practices?; (b) How is the mathematical communication understood by teachers?; and (c) Which difficulties do the teachers find in the promotion of mathematical communication in their practices? A qualitative methodology was chosen as a case study. Consequently, three elementary school teachers of the same group of schools and following the orientations of the new Mathematics Program, were selected. The data was collected from a non-participant observation of three classes of each teacher, one critical reflection by the teachers at the end of each class and a semi-structured interview to each teacher at the end of the study. The results show that the tasks and the selected materials and the way the teachers structured and organized the classes, were favourable to the development of verbal language. Oral communication was established in the group-class in the interaction between the teacher and the students and in the interaction among the students themselves. In some moments, several spaces of questening, in which the students were able to interact with the teacher and with their peers, exchanging opinions and taking part in the decision making process, were created. The question “Why” was frequently utilized by the teachers at these moments. However, questions of low cognitive level – confirmation questions – inserted in the recitation pattern, prevailed. In the tasks of open creation, the students were stimulated to communicate and to justify theirs findings. In the more suggested tasks, the exploration and the manipulation of some materials by the students were not followed-up by a favourable orientation to the sharing and building of meanings, a certain control of the teachers towards the work developed by the students, was evident. The teachers created some conditions in which the mathematical meanings should have been active and interactively built, and the discussion, the negociation and the argumentation, were encouraged, althought without success. In spite of some lack of exactitude, the teachers were concerned with the adequacy of the mathematical language. The mathematical knowledge, not fully structured and a didactic knowledge which differs from the present curricular guidelines, were the main constrains to the promotion of mathematical communication. |
