A contabilidade do Mosteiro de S. Martinho de Tibães nos séculos XVIII e XIX

Abstract

Este trabalho é um estudo de caso sobre a contabilidade num mosteiro beneditino português, o Mosteiro de S. Martinho de Tibães, nos séculos XVIII e XIX, no seu enquadramento social, económico, e político. Foram consultadas as fontes manuscritas desse período, mais concretamente os livros existentes no Fundo Monástico Conventual do Arquivo Distrital Braga, para os anos de 1731, 1767 e 1822, tendo-se verificado que os monges consideravam a estabilidade como uma característica muito importante, pois os livros mantém-se sem alterações significativas ao longo do período estudado. Os livros de registo eram muito detalhados e minuciosos, contabilizados em partida simples, por cargas e descargas, tendo, no entanto, na complexidade dos livros existentes e nas ferramentas de controlo interno aplicadas, a capacidade de gerir e administrar eficientemente o seu domínio, sendo portanto suficientes para as necessidades do mosteiro. Os livros eram copiados para serem guardados como registo, e neles transparece a continuidade e a rotina, não sendo notórias marcas dos períodos conturbados, histórica e economicamente, que abrangem. Este mosteiro era a casa-mãe da mais rica ordem religiosa em Portugal, a Congregação de São Bento, e é também responsável pelo maior espólio de fontes manuscritas do Fundo Monástico Conventual do Arquivo Distrital Braga, pelo que a maior dificuldade deste trabalho prendeu-se com a falta de tempo para as estudar convenientemente, ficando a certeza que existe informação para muitos outros trabalhos distintos, quer aprofundando este trabalho por mais anos e comparando com a informação constante nas actas dos Capítulos-Gerais e nos livros da Congregação, ou dos visitadores, bem como estudando as relações contabilísticas entre a congregação e o mosteiro, ou com os poderes eclesiásticos e políticos, ou com as populações da região.

This work is a case study about the accounting in the eighteen and nineteen centuries in a Portuguese Benedictine monastery, Mosteiro de S. Martinho de Tibães, considering its social, economical and political frame, using as sources the monastery's accounting books, specifically for the years of 1731, 1767 and 1822. Stability was found to be very important for the monks, since the books do not show any significant changes through the years, not even reflecting the political and social crisis of those times. The accounting books used were very detailed and thorough, and it was found that the books kept in the archives were most likely copied from the working papers. Even though the charge and discharge method was used, it was sufficient to control the monastery's estate, due to the minuteness and diligence of the registers, and also due to effective tools for internal control, like regular visits with separate reports, and triennial analysis of all accounts, making it even possible to detect fraud, and to ensure the maintenance of the monastery's vast domain. This work tries, therefore, to shed some light into the accounting ways of this monastery, which was the head monastery for richest religious order in Portugal, the Benedictine. Since many of their accounting books were saved, there were too many sources to analyse conveniently, due to lack of time. Many other works wait dormant in those books, either by pursuing the line of this work for more years, and also using the archive books of the congregation and the minutes of the triennal meetings to confront results. Many relations between the monastery and the congregation, with either the populations, the other clergy, and the government, can also be successfully studied in the many books available.
