Resumo(s)This paper takes a new approach to studying the significant factors that determined the number of Catholic priests in Europe between 1950 and 2006. Using panel data analysis, we found a quadratic relation between the number of Catholic priests per Catholic population and real income per capita. We also identified other factors that are related to the historical role of Catholicism in the country: the fertility rate, the proportion of urban residents, and the proportion immigrant population.
