Due to the history of lack of success which has characterized the Portuguese educational system, with special emphasis in Mathematics as a school subject, we aim at researching in what way has the growing implementation of collaborative practices promoted under the project “Plan of Action of Mathematic” contributed to the increase of school success in Mathematics in the third cycle of basic education in Vila Verde’s cluster of schools. As a basis for this study, we must clarify what the concept of school really is – its mission and functions as well as the type of cultures it gathers. We also intend to analyze possible causes for the widespread lack of success in Mathematics in Portugal and to discuss specific measures, as in the case of the project “Plan of Mathematics”. This is indeed a project built according to the uniqueness of each school by its teachers, according to the autonomy that central services have attributed them. As far as the theoretical framework is concerned, we aimed at building a referential index that allowed us not only to clarify and establish the limits of study for the research we performed, but also to deepen and understand the concepts involved. The research methodology we have considered as the most adequate was the mixed one, of quality and quantity nature. In what regards the instruments and techniques of data analysis, we have chosen to collect documents, field notes and to make an inquiry for each questionnaire (n=50). Contents analysis and statistical procedures for data analysis have also been carried out. From the analysis of the results it was possible to conclude that the project “Plan of Action of Mathematic” has contributed for the collaboration among the teachers of Mathematics, promoting curriculum sharing practices. We could also recognize that the learning environment provided to the students of these schools has improved, as well as educational success, particularly in Mathematics. |
