This investigation studied the use of the Internet by the Catholic Church, based on the case study of the website paroquiasdebraga.org. In a constantly updated society, it is our goal to understand how the new communication techniques and the new technologies are used by an ancient institution, accused many times of being backward. With this work, we have tried to understand how, in this particular case, the archpresbytery of Braga is using the new media and new technologies to communicate with their followers. At the same time, we would like to comprehend how the website is seen by the community and how they use it. For that, we defined this question as a starting point: Did the use of new media and new technologies lead to a change in the communications model of the Catholic Church? Based on this question, we tried to understand if (H1) the utilization of new communication techniques and new technologies increased the relationship with the different publics and if (H2) the use of new communication techniques and new technologies affects the image of the institution. To do that, we resorted to submit questionnaire to a representative sample of the community subjected to this study. At the same time, interviews were conducted to key elements in the communication development of the Archpresbytery and the Archbishopric. Finally, we analysed the content of the website, to try to understand the types of content produced. After analysing all the information collected, we concluded that new communication techniques and new technologies are beginning to be used, although there is still a long way to go before these become broadly used, since, while they are labelled as being excellent, they are still not common at the daily life. |
