Matemática e Música — sistemas de afinação no século XVIII

Abstract

O matemático e filósofo Pitágoras foi um dos primeiros a dedicar-se ao estudo da relação entre a matemática e a música. Com o monocórdio descobriu relações entre intervalos musicais e proporções numéricas e desenvolveu o primeiro sistema de afinação — o sistema pitagórico — para construir a escala musical. No entanto este sistema não era consistente; pois, por exemplo, doze intervalos de quinta não correspondiam a sete intervalos de oitava. O erro que resulta dessa diferença é designado por coma pitagórico e torna impossível a utilização de algumas tonalidades. Com o decorrer dos séculos foram propostos novos sistemas para resolver esse problema, ajustando ou temperando os intervalos da escala musical. Neste trabalho são apresentados sistemas de afinação que foram desenvolvidos ou aplicados no século XVIII e as resoluções matemáticas correspondentes.

The mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras was the first who studied the relation between mathematics and music. With the monochord he discovered relations between musical intervals and numeric proportions and developed the first tuning system — the pythagorean tuning system — in order to construct the musical scale. However, this system was not consistent, since, for example, twelve intervals of fifths did not correspond to seven octaves. The error due to this difference is designated as pythagorean comma and hinders the use of some tonalities. Over the centuries, new systems have been proposed in order to solve this problem by adjusting the intervals of the musical scale. In this work are presented tuning systems that were developed or applied in the 18th century and the corresponding mathematical resolutions.
