Mnemósine: as bases da construção de um novo discurso na obra de Mies van der Rohe

Abstract

Esta dissertação centra-se na análise das influências que moldaram a vida e a obra do arquiteto alemão Mies van der Rohe. O valor da sua arquitetura é inegável, por se tratar de uma das personagens mais icónicas do século passado. O seu maior contributo para o desenvolvimento do campo da disciplina reside, sobretudo, numa mudança de discurso que o transportou de uma prática considerada tradicionalista para uma de vanguarda, que está na base do desenvolvimento da arquitetura moderna. O estudo busca compreender os fatores que contribuíram para essa mudança e destaca a importância da Mnemósine, inspiração que vai além da mimese, na construção de uma nova identidade arquitetónica, como reflexo de um conjunto de influências, na sua criação artística. A evolução da prática de Mies foi uma resposta radical ao contexto histórico, político e cultural das décadas de 20 e 30 do século passado. A partir deste ponto, as suas influências iniciais deram lugar a uma assimilação gradual dos ideais vanguardistas que emergiam um pouco por toda a Europa, conduzindo a uma mudança significativa no seu discurso e na sua prática. Essa transformação é interpretada como uma resposta às mudanças sociais, tecnológicas e filosóficas da época, refletindo a busca por uma expressão que capturasse a essência do novo tempo.

The research focuses on analyzing the influences that shaped the life and work of the German architect Mies van der Rohe. The value of his architecture is undeniable, as he is one of the most iconic figures of the last century. His real contribution to the development of the discipline lies above all in a change of discourse that moved him from a practice considered traditionalist to one of the avant-garde, which is at the basis of the development of modern architecture. The study seeks to understand the factors that contributed to this change and highlights the importance of Mnemósine, an inspiration that goes beyond mimesis, in the construction of a new architectural identity, illustrating the relevance of influences in artistic creation. The evolution of Mies' practice was a profound response to the historical, political and cultural context of the 20s and 30s. From this point on, his initial traditionalist influences gave way to a gradual assimilation of the avant-garde ideals that were emerging all over Europe, bringing about a significant change in his discourse and practice. This transformation is interpreted as a response to the social, technological and philosophical changes of the time, reflecting the search for an expression that captured the essence of the new era.
