This study focuses mainly on two topics, namely problem solving and 2nd degree equation resolution. It was developed in a 9th grade schooling class using an active learning strategy, Gallery Walk, seeking to develop the ability to solve problems in students. This is one of the skills that the curricular guidelines of the Mathematics Programs of Basic Education value in the learning process of the student. The main objective of this study was to investigate the contribution of problem solving within a Gallery Walk in learning process of 2nd degree equations. As a way to guide it, two research questions were outlined: (1) What are the main difficulties experienced by students in solving problems involving 2nd degree equations? and (2) How does the completion of a Gallery Walk promote the engagement of students in learning 2nd degree equations? Towards the objective and research issues, it was chosen to be carried out the study following a qualitative methodology. The data were collected through the observation and recording of the classes, the students' productions, the field notes and the questionnaire. Throughout this study, it was observed that the most used method in the resolution of 2nd degree equations was through the resolvent formula. Regarding the difficulties experienced by the students in solving problems, it is observed that it is in the choice of strategies that they show more gaps, due to the flaws in the interpretation of the problem statement, and therefore difficult to solve it, and, consequently, makes it difficult to discuss the results obtained. After the intervention, and according to the perceptions of the students regarding the Gallery Walk, these refer that this experience brought advantages and disadvantages. Among the advantages indicate that it favours learning, promotes group work and the development of new strategies. As for the disadvantages, they highlight the fact that some members of the group do not work, the noise that was felt and the short time available to solve the problem in question. |
