In this paper, the authors discuss the therapist’s costs and benefits of the psychotherapy practice. They start by assuming the benefits of the psychotherapy for the clients; they justify the positive impact of talking about emotional hard or potentially traumatic experiences on their growth and change. Nevertheless, not forgetting the relational character of the psychotherapy, the authors discuss the negative impact that the clinical act of listening horrible narrations and /or witnessing the client’s suffering, may have on the therapist himself. Assuming psychotherapy as a risk job, but noticing the resilience numerous psychotherapists possess, the authors discuss the other side of the question, and underline the opportunity for personal growth and professional development that the practice of psychotherapy might also provide. Finally they suggest a number of self-care indications for the therapists, in order to prevent risks and to increase benefits from the psychotherapy practice. |
