Viagem à Itália: por entre as ruínas, para além das ruínas

Abstract

O objeto de estudo deste trabalho é a ruína – a ruína arquitetônica, a ruína do cinema, e a ruína do tempo. Especificamente, esta dissertação procura compreender e refletir sobre a ruína de um lugar como Nápoles, cujo passado não é mera coisa morta mas coexiste com o presente num todo vivo. Assim, sentindo o impulso que, historicamente, tem atraído viajantes artísticos, literários e cinematográficos a esta terra, embarcaremos em um grand tour pela ruinosa Nápoles de Roberto Rossellini no seu filme Viaggio in Italia (1954). O “viajar” impulsiona a narrativa deste filme e, por isso, também será o catalisador por trás deste trabalho, atuando ao mesmo tempo como ferramenta e objeto de estudo. A dissertação divide-se em dois volumes: No primeiro, com o cinema, iremos percorrer o terreno ruinoso de Nápoles e preencher os seus vazios esculpidos pelo tempo e pela destruição para encontrar, sob os escombros, aquilo que não pode ser destruído. No segundo volume, iremos expandir esta “viagem cinematográfica” para além dos limites da tela através de uma outra jornada, silenciosa e íntima: a minha viagem à Itália.

The ruin is this work’s object of study – the architectural ruin, the ruin of cinema, and the ruin of time. More precisely, this dissertation seeks to understand and reflect upon the ruin of a place like Naples, whose past is not a mere dead thing but coexists with the present as a living whole. Thus, feeling the impulse that, historically, has attracted artistic, literary and cinematographic voyagers to this land, we will embark on a grand tour of Roberto Rossellini's ruinous Naples in his film Viaggio in Italia (1954). “Travelling” drives the narrative of this film and, therefore, will also be the catalyst behind this work, acting both as a tool and as a study object. The dissertation is comprised of two volumes. In the first, we will traverse, with cinema, the ruinous terrain of Naples and fill its voids carved by time and destruction to find, beneath the rubble, that which cannot be destroyed. In the second volume, we will expand this “cinematic journey” beyond the limits of the screen through another, silent and intimate journey: my voyage to Italy.
