Realidades da virtualidade: as sete subcategorias virtuais provenientes da análise do capítulo “Cyberspace, Virtuality and Real” de Elizabeth Grosz

Abstract

A partir de uma análise do livro “Architecture from the Outside: Essays on Virtual and Real Space”, de Elizabeth Grosz, publicado em 2001 por The MIT PRESS, esta investigação pretende reinterpretar conceitos espaciais cruciais no espectro da arquitetura. Em específico, o caso de estudo estará presente maioritariamente nos capítulos da Parte 1 em formato teórico e sendo aplicado na Parte 2 num registo mais prático acompanhado de exemplos. Segundo surgem questões que põem em causa a definição de termos como virtualidade e real, assim como realidade e virtual, esta investigação procura alargar o campo de estudo e promover novas perspetivas filosóficas. Os quatro termos em debate na frase anterior foram especificamente organizados nesta sequência, ao invés da tradicional antonímia, como oportunidade de exploração proveniente da sua cooperação no sentido conotativo e/ou conceito paradoxal. Com efeito, partimos inicialmente do título do capítulo em estudo, “Cyberspace, Virtuality and Real”, o qual usaremos para explicar a sua lógica ao longo do trabalho. Esta análise procurará reconhecer inovações ao nível do pensamento que se poderão refletir no mundo da arquitetura e, consequentemente, em novas abordagens espaciais e ideais projetuais. Em suma, procura-se defender e apontar uma hipótese de existência real da virtualidade. Por fim, lançar-se-ão reflexões arquitetónicas resultantes do processo da investigação e dos desenhos que a acompanham.

From an analysis of the book “Architecture from the Outside: Essays on Virtual and Real Space”, by Elizabeth Grosz, published in 2001 by The MIT PRESS, this research intends to reinterpret crucial spatial concepts in the architecture spectrum. Specifically, the case study will be mostly present in the chapters of Part 1 in a theoretical format and applied in Part 2 in a more practical register accompanied by examples. As questions arise that question the definition of terms like virtuality and real, as well as reality and virtual, this research seeks to widen the field of study and promote new philosophical perspectives. The four terms under discussion in the previous sentence were specifically arranged in this sequence, instead of the traditional antonymy, as an opportunity for exploration stemming from their cooperation in the connotative sense and/or paradoxical concept. Indeed, we start initially from the title of the chapter under study, “Cyberspace, Virtuality and Real”, which we will use to explain its logic throughout the paper. This analysis will seek to recognize innovations at the level of thought that may be reflected in the world of architecture and, consequently, in new spatial approaches and design ideals. In short, it seeks to defend and point out a hypothesis of virtuality’s real existence. Finally, architectural reflections resulting from the research process and the drawings that accompany it will be launched.
