Um edifício/livro de Eduardo Souto de Moura: sobre memória no ato de projetar

Abstract

O binómio edifício/livro foi referido, pela primeira vez, por Victor Hugo na sua obra “Notre Dame de Paris 1482”, em 1831. Com a frase “O livro matará o edifício”, o autor criticava a sociedade francesa do século XV, tentando chamar a atenção para a riqueza histórica, social e estética da Catedral de Notre Dame de Paris que estaria prestes a ser demolida devido ao estado precário em que se encontrava. Em suma, o escritor defende que a invenção da imprensa seria o fim da arquitetura. De facto, arquitetura e literatura, poderão relacionar-se, assim como um edifício pode ser comparado a um livro, considerando os vários elementos que o compõem, (como o alçado e a capa, as divisões e os capítulos, e até o seu conteúdo, ou seja, a sua identidade e memória). Esta Dissertação de Mestrado tem, então, como objetivo principal defender a visão do edifício como livro, demonstrando a importância da preservação da memória através dos elementos construídos de um projeto específico construído, reconstruído e reconhecido. O trabalho foi dividido em duas partes. A primeira dedica-se a uma reflexão teórica sobre o edifício e o livro, através da apresentação de instrumentos teóricos para a compreensão de ambos – como os conceitos gerais, descrições e reflexões sobre estes dois objetos fisicamente distintos e as composições e as tipologias que ambos podem apresentar – e dedica-se, ainda, a uma abordagem histórica. A segunda parte é dedicada ao estudo de um edifício como caso de estudo para esta abordagem metafórica: o Mercado do Carandá, (1980-2010), em Braga, de Eduardo Souto de Moura. Esta parte desenvolve-se em dois capítulos: no primeiro são descritas as fases do projeto; no segundo é estudado o edifício por um ponto de vista metafórico e focado no binómio edifício/livro. No fim, pretende-se ilustrar esta metáfora e concluir numa reflexão sobre a importância da preservação da memória e da história das cidades e dos edifícios, principalmente no que toca a projetar sobre o construído.

The binomial building/book was mentioned, for the first time, by Victor Hugo in his work “Notre Dame de Paris 1482”, in 1831. With the phrase “The book will kill the building”, the author criticized French society of the 15th century, trying to draw attention to the historical, social and aesthetic richness of the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris which would be about to be demolished due to its precarious state in which it was found. In short, the writer argues that the invention of the press would be the end of architecture. In fact, architecture and literature can be related, just as a building can be compared to a book, considering the various elements that compose it, (such as the façade and the cover, the divisions and the chapters, and even its content, that is, its identity and memory). This Master’s Dissertation has, therefore, as its main objective to defend the vision of the building as a book, demonstrating the importance of preserving the memory through the built elements of a specific built project, rebuilt and recognized. The work was divided into two parts. The first is devoted to a theorical reflection on the building and the book, through the presentation of theoretical instruments for understanding both - such as general concepts, descriptions and reflections on these two physically distinct objects and the compositions and typologies that both can present – and it is also dedicated to a historical approach. The second part is dedicated to the study of a building as a case study for this metaphorical approach: Mercado do Carandá, (1980-2010), in Braga, by Eduardo Souto de Moura. This part is divided into two chapters: the first describes the phases of the project; the second, studies the building from a metaphorical point of view and focuses on the binomial building/book. In the end, it is intended to illustrate this metaphor and conclude with a reflection on the importance of preserving the memory and history of cities and buildings, especially when it comes to designing on the built.
