reforça a invisibilidade desta realidade. Intimate partner violence between women is still an invisible, marginal, and immensely complex reality which imposes a reframing and reflection of the social roles attributed to women and, consequently, of the roles of perpetrator and victim. This phenomenon has characteristics and dynamics similar to those of the violence between heterosexual couples. However, they are two distinct realities. Scientific research in this area has faced different methodological difficulties that may justify the dispersion of prevalence rates nationally and internationally. In order to overcome the scarce knowledge about intimate partner violence between women (especially in the Portuguese and Brazilian overview) this dissertation intends to contribute to the development of the research by understanding the specificities of this phenomenon, identifying the prevalence of victimization and perpetration behaviors, analyzing how gender stereotypes («masculinity»/«femininity») influence these relationships, and investigating the participants expectations about the existing support mechanisms. To this end, a quantitative methodology was adopted through the application of an online questionnaire survey, aimed at lesbian or bisexual women, over 18 years old, who have been and/or are victims and/or perpetrators of violence in an intimate relationship with a partner of the same sex. The final sample consisted of 253 women, aged 18 to 60 years (M=29.51; SD=7.760), with 86 (34.0%) self-identifying as bisexual and 167 (66.0%) as lesbian. The results reveal high prevalence rates on victimization (96.4%) and perpetration (44.3%), highlighting psychological violence with 98.0% vs 89.3%, socioeconomic violence with 88.9% vs 53.6%, physical violence with 72.5% vs 50.9%, and sexual violence with 59.8% vs 15.2%. There are power and control dynamics analogous to those that occur in heterosexual intimate relationships. Gender stereotypes influence, or can influence, intimate relationships between women, and are relevant to understand this phenomenon. Lesbian or bisexual women face a social context that tends to be heterosexist and homophobic, which consigns them to silence and reinforces the invisibility of this reality. |
