As mulheres e a doença: aproximações preliminares

Abstract

Em Portugal, não abundam os trabalhos, no âmbito da história das mulheres, sobre as doenças específicas do sexo feminino, embora o parto e os riscos que lhe são inerentes estejam muito presentes na literatura médica, designadamente nos séculos XVIII e XIX. Sem haver a pretensão de colmatar essa lacuna, pretendemos, com o presente artigo, dar a conhecer, entre outros aspetos, as enfermidades que mais afetavam a mulher em diferentes contextos, o modo como a sociedade e a medicina encaravam a condição feminina e era justificada a pretensa inferioridade da mulher face ao sexo masculino, que terapias eram usadas para combater os males de que padeciam, que produtos e processos usados para a prática do aborto. Para a consecução dos objetivos estabelecidos, recorremos, essencialmente, à literatura médica e a estudos que versam sobre a temática que constitui objeto do nosso trabalho.

In Portugal, there is no abundance of work, within the scope of women's history, on specific diseases of the female sex, although childbirth and the inherent risks are very present in medical literature, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries. Without intending to fill this gap, we intend, with this article, to make known, among other aspects, the diseases that most affected women in different contexts, the way society and medicine viewed the female condition and it was justified the alleged inferiority of women to men, what therapies were used to combat the ills they suffered, what products and processes used to practice abortion. In order to achieve the established objectives, we essentially resort to medical literature and studies that deal with the theme that is the subject of our work.
