dc.description.abstract | Nowadays, at industrial environments, the treatment of aluminium-silicon alloy baths is carried out through three fundamental stages: refining, modification, and degassing. The main purpose of this procedure is to reduce grain size, modify the eutectic silicon, and eliminate hydrogen dissolved in the bath, which at the time of solidification causes pores inside the metal. These microstructural changes cause an increase in the strength and ductility of the material, which is very beneficial. Then, to achieve an even more significant increase in properties, the aluminium parts, after solidification, are subjected to a solubilisation and ageing heat treatment, which, in the case of Al-Si alloys, causes first a spheroidization of the eutectic silicon particles, and then the precipitation of compounds such as magnesium. These two factors combined make it possible to further increase the mechanical properties of the material. It has been verified, in the last years, that ultrasonic vibration may have an active effect in the improvement of these properties, revealing itself as a promising alternative, in detriment of the conventional chemical treatment. Thus, this work, carried out in an aluminium foundry industry, studied the possibility of replacing the chemical treatment of liquid metal, by the incorporation of ultrasonic vibration, in a part produced by gravity die casting, consisting of the material AlSi7Mg0,3. In addition, the possibility of reducing the heat treatment time was studied, and the influence of ultrasonic vibration on the increase of the mechanical properties of the material was evaluated. To draw conclusions, four different vibration times (5, 7, 10 and 15 seconds) were applied and the characterisation of all the pieces under study was performed through thermal analysis (influence on the cooling time), visualisation of the microstructure and hardness and traction tests. | por |
