A festa das Almas: o aniversário nas confrarias das Almas do Purgatório de Braga, na Idade Moderna

Abstract

Neste trabalho procuramos analisar os «aniversários» das confrarias de Braga na Idade Moderna, dando realce a estas festividades enquanto mobilizadoras destas instituições em favor das Almas do Purgatório. Se cada uma das 12 confrarias desta invocação possuía identidade própria e autonomia, todas tinham traços comuns e o mesmo objetivo: libertar as Almas que se encontravam em sofrimento no Purgatório, lugar temporário de purgação dos pecados e de onde se podia sair com o auxílio dos vivos. Para além das festas que decorreriam ao longo do ano e do dia dos Santos e dos Fiéis de Deus, as confrarias das Almas celebravam as Almas na sua festa maior: o «aniversário» É nosso objetivo analisar esta festividade e integrá-la no ambiente barroco em que se inseria.

In this work we try to analyze the birthdays of the confraternities of Braga in the Modern Age, highlighting these festivities as promoters of these institutions in favor of the Souls of Purgatory. If each of the twelve confraternities of this invocation had their own identity and autonomy, they all had common traits and the same goal: to free the Souls who were suffering in Purgatory, a temporary place of purgation of sins and from which one could go out with the aid of alive. In addition to the festivities that would take place throughout the year and on the day of the Saints and the Faithful of God, the confraternities of the Souls celebrated the Souls in their greatest celebration: the anniversary. It is our goal to analyze this festivity and integrate it into the baroque environment in which it was inserted.
