dc.description.abstract | The Parity Law is a fundamental milestone in the struggle for gender equality in Portugal. As a positive mechanism, made it possible to change the panorama of female representation in the Assembly of the Republic, with a maximum record in 2019: at the first plenary meeting of the XIV Legislature, 92 women were present, which translates into a female representation of 40%. The present dissertation focuses on the application of this law in Portugal, questioning whether an increase in female representation in the Assembly of Republic led to an increase in female substantive representation, in the period between 2005, the year of the beginning of the X Legislature, where the Parity Law was not yet implemented, and the 2022, corresponding to the end of the XIV Legislature. The study, supported by the conceptual framework of substantive political representation by Celis et al. (2008) and Celis (2009) and by mixed methodological strategy, shows that greater number of women deputies in the Assembly of Republic leads to an increase in substantive female representation. | por |
