Modelação espacial na obra dos Congregados em Braga: Recursos geométricos e matemáticos na última campanha de obras do séc. XVIII

Abstract

A presente investigação incide no estudo do conjunto edificado dos Congregados de Braga, compreendendo a Basílica e antiga casa do Oratório. Espaço maior de culto e cultura na cidade de Braga, o conjunto apresenta uma localização privilegiada no Campo de Sant’Ana, atual Avenida Central. Obra extraordinária do Barroco/Rococó em Portugal detém uma escala impactante, afirmando a sua presença na cidade com grande robustez e vivacidade através do seu volume e extraordinária linha curva da sua fachada. Já no interior, encontramos um espaço de grande regularidade geométrica cujo aparato cénico é potenciado pela relação entre ornamento arquitetónico e profusão de artes aplicadas. Tendo a sua construção início em 1703, esta estende-se por várias décadas sendo apenas concluída mais de dois séculos depois, em 1964. Uma cronologia extensa, que se revela em distintas opções de traçado conforme a sucessão de diferentes mestres que aí participam. Contudo, este trabalho incide mais particularmente na campanha de obras da segunda metade do séc. XVIII, nomeadamente a conclusão da basílica e da fachada do conjunto, orientada ao campo de Sant’Ana, comummente atribuída ao mestre André Soares. Ambicionando produzir uma compreensão aprofundada do caso de estudo, a investigação parte da leitura do contexto internacional e regional, na época setecentista, que enquadra a obra e permite avaliar a qualidade do seu espaço e imagem urbana. Uma análise somente possível pela sistematização de um apurado levantamento arquitetónico. Por outro lado, e partir dos domínios da geometria e da matemática é-nos permitido interpretar e especular, graficamente, acerca das características dos espaços, ornamentos, volumetria, e imagem, visando a compreensão de opções de traçado e discurso formal consequentes à campanha de obras da segunda metade séc. XVIII. Com isto, e apesar de alguns estudos teóricos e gráficos sobre a obra, esta investigação contribui para a fixação de uma análise sólida e informada, quanto à sua qualidade espacial, motivações e conteúdos intrínsecos ao seu desenho.

The present investigation focuses on the study of the building of the Congregados de Braga, including the Basilica and the former house of the Oratory. One of the largest spaces of worship and culture in the city of Braga, the complex has a privileged location in Campo de Sant’Ana, current Avenida Central. An extraordinary work of Baroque/Rococo in Portugal, the building has an impressive scale, asserting its presence in the city with great strength and vivacity through its volume and an extraordinary work of curved line of its facade. Inside, we find a space of great geometric regularity whose scenic apparatus is enhanced by the relationship between architectural ornament and the profusion of applied arts. Having its construction started in 1703, its works spans several decades and was only completed more than two centuries later, in 1964. An extensive chronology that reveals different options of layout, according to the succession of different masters who participated in it. However, this work focuses more particularly on the works campaign of the second half of the XVIII century, namely in the completion of the basilica and the façade of the ensemble, oriented towards the Sant’Ana field, commonly attributed to master André Soares. Intend to produce an in-depth understanding of the case study, the investigation starts from the reading of the international and regional background, in the 18th century, which frames the work and allows evaluation of the quality of its space and urban image. An analysis that is only possible through the systematization of an accurate architectural survey. On the other hand, and starting from the domains of geometry and mathematics, we are allowed to interpret and speculate, graphically, about the characteristics of spaces, ornaments, volumetry, and images, aiming at understanding the options of layout and formal discourse resulting from the campaign of works from the second half of the XVIII century. Hereupon, and despite some theoretical and graphic studies about the work, this investigation contributes to the establishment of solid and informed analysis, regarding its spatial quality, motivations and intrinsic contents to its design.
