O papel da pós-edição enquanto etapa do processo de tradução – experiência de estágio na SDL Portugal

Abstract

O presente relatório tem como objetivo descrever a experiência de estágio curricular desenvolvida na empresa SDL Portugal, em regime remoto, no âmbito do 4.º semestre do Mestrado em Tradução e Comunicação Multilingue. Além da habitual apresentação dos objetivos inerentes ao estágio curricular e da descrição detalhada da empresa, este projeto tem também como principal enfoque a pós-edição, sendo este o seu tema de abertura. Numa altura em que se verifica um aumento exponencial da procura de serviços de tradução e com prazos cada vez mais curtos, tornou-se indispensável utilizar todos os recursos disponíveis de forma a agilizar o processo de tradução e o subjacente trabalho dos tradutores para, consequentemente, responder ao mercado em constante mudança. Assim sendo, será feito um enquadramento teórico, em primeiro lugar, sobre a globalização, que representou e continua a representar um enorme contributo para os avanços na indústria da tradução, dada também a sua importância no aumento da procura de serviços de tradução para ligar povos de todas as partes do mundo. Em seguida, será feita uma introdução à tradução automática e às ferramentas de apoio à tradução que, por conseguinte, me permitirão introduzir a temática do presente projeto, ou seja, a pós edição. No seguimento deste enquadramento teórico, e de modo a comprovar os temas nele defendidos, será introduzido um elemento de investigação que recairá sobre a comparação dos diferentes motores de tradução automática e a sua eficácia em diferentes tipologias textuais trabalhadas ao longo do estágio curricular. Numa fase posterior à contextualização teórica e à análise da investigação desenvolvida no segundo capítulo, será feito um enquadramento do estágio curricular, onde, neste âmbito, para além da apresentação da empresa e dos objetivos, serão analisadas também as metodologias de trabalho, o volume de trabalho desenvolvido ao longo desta experiência e onde será feita uma reflexão sobre exemplos práticos, recorrendo a dados extraídos durante estágio. Por sua vez, esta reflexão permitir-me á terminar o quarto capítulo com uma consciencialização sobre os principais desafios sentidos ao longo desta experiência. Como modo de conclusão do presente projeto, serão apresentadas as considerações finais mais relevantes, que não se basearão apenas a um nível académico, isto é, refletindo sobre esta experiência como seguimento dos conhecimentos adquiridos ao longo do percurso académico, mas também a nível pessoal e a sua importância para o nosso crescimento enquanto tradutores.

This report aims to describe the remote internship experience held at SDL Portugal, as part of the 4th semester of the Master's Degree in Translation and Multilingual Communication. Besides the usual presentation of the objectives inherent to the curricular internship and the detailed description of the company, this project also has post-editing as its main focus. At a time when there is an exponential increase in demand for translation services and with ever-shorter deadlines, it has become essential to use all available resources in order to speed up the translation process and the translator’s work and, consequently, respond to the constantly changing market. Therefore, a theoretical framework will be made, firstly, on globalisation, which has represented and continues to represent an enormous contribution to advances in the translation industry, given also its importance in increasing the demand for translation services to connect people from all parts of the world. Thereafter, an introduction to machine translation and CAT Tools will also be made, which will then allow me to introduce the main topic of this report, i.e., post-editing. Following this theoretical framework, and in order to prove the issues defended therein, a research element that will focus on the comparison of different machine translation engines and their effectiveness in different text typologies worked throughout the curricular internship will be introduced. Following the theoretical contextualisation and the analysis of the research developed in the second chapter, the curricular internship framework will be made. In this context, in addition to the presentation of the company and the objectives, the work methodologies and the volume of work developed during this experience will also be analysed, and a reflection on practical examples will be made, using data gathered throughout the internship. This reflection will allow me to end the fourth chapter stating the main challenges felt throughout this experience. As a way of concluding this project, the most relevant final considerations will be presented, which will not only be based on an academic level, i.e., reflecting on this experience as a continuation of the knowledge acquired during the academic career, but also on a personal level and its importance for our growth as translators.
